Sick of listening to you children, bored during a lengthy road trip, whine, “are we there yet?” With a bit of creativity, it’s easy to make a road trip more exciting for everyone in the car. Try some of these ideas:
Tell Stories
Ask your children to share their favorite stories, whether they’re silly or spooky. You can also make up stories as a family by going around and having each person make up a sentence. Your unique family story will build and can take unexpected twists, keeping everyone on their toes as their turn approaches. Even better, you can write down the story as it develops and have your children illustrate it for a great family memory.
Make an Album
Similarly, you can create a family memory by compiling a vacation album. Give your kids a disposable or digital camera to capture what they enjoy most along the way. Everyone can jot down notes and draw pictures, which can be put together in an album once you return home.
Play Games
Bring along a smartphone or tablet that you’ve downloaded road trip games onto. Games like Road Trip Scavenger Hunt, Road Trip Bingo, Family Car Games or Mad Libs get the whole family involved so everyone can have fun on the go. But it’s also important to disconnect from technology every now and then. Try some classic “old school” games like 20 Questions, I Spy and The License Plate Game as well.
Visit Local Attractions
Plan a few fun stops along the way to break up the long drive. Everyone can stretch their legs and enjoy seeing something fun and unusual. There are lots of websites that list popular road trip attractions—such as Tiny Town in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas or the Big Foot Discovery Museum in Felton, California—that you can refer to in advance while planning your road trip.
